  • Check other Netflix settings

Preparing for work

  1. Open the file with subtitles: File > Open
  2. Open the video file by clicking on the right part
  3. Open the audio by clicking on the below part (the same video file)

Translation

The spotting is already done, but if you need to put 2 subtitles together, lengthen one for better visibility or whatever, here are the technical standards we use:

  • 2 frames before and after shot change
  • Max. 42 characters per line.
  • Max 2 lines per subtitle.
  • Min of 21 frames for a subtitle (=5/6 sec)
  • Max 7 seconds for a subtitle
  • 2 frames between each subtitle or 12 frames or more.
  • attention to the number of characters per line (punctuation and spaces are to be counted)
  • be careful with line breaks, sometimes capitalization is automatic
  • do not forget the italic formatting

SDH

In addition to “Translation” rules, please follow the Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) Guidelines.

Review

The Reviewer should:

  • Watch the whole film with subtitles
  • Correct timing
  • Correct spelling
  • Check that translation is complete against the speech (correct omissions, wrong translation)
  • Run Netflix Quality Check and resolve warnings
  • Check the translator's signature

Quality Check

Please run Netflix quality check ans resolve the warnings before delivery on every step (after translation, after SDH, after review)

Tools > Netflix quality check

Issue resolving

Duration

Choose Tools → Adjust duration - recalculate chars/sec

Or you may add a couple of milliseconds at the beginning or in the end of subtitle:

Pay attention to the gaps and use the below audio wave to see the beginning and the end of the speech:

Please compare:

Text length

The text should be max. 42 symbols per line.
Max. 2 lines in one subtitle.

You should split the long text between two lines. Read the rules how to split it.

Frame gaps

Spotting is already done, don't change it.

If Netflix Quality Check shows the issue “min 2 frames gap”:

  1. Open Tools > Apply minimum gap between subtitles
  2. Min. miliseconds between subtitles: 84
  3. Frame rate info: take from video file properties
  4. Frames: 2
  5. Click OK

After this you should check the audio against the speech.
And if needed you may also adjust the subtitle on the wave.
When you drag and drop you will not extend the 2 frames limit. The tool doesn't allow it.
E.g. when I hold and pull the (blue) end I can't pull it more.

Translator's signature

If you did the translation, please add a subtitle in the end:
Translated by [Name]
in your respected language. Please find Translator's credit here. E.g.

you can use pen name at the end of file.

Other tips

If there is a signature on the screen, use tag {\a6} to move the subtitle above, e.g.:

{\a6}man hat eine Fahrt
und die muss geleitet werden.
