TER Introduction for Amazon Suppliers

What is TER?

TER Stands for Translation Edit Range. It is a way to measure the edit distance of a post- edited segment. The TER score can be easily and accurately converted into a weighted word to calculate fair financial compensation for the work.

How is it calculated?

Depending on the complexity of changes, the weight of an edit can be 25% (no edit needed, so 25% of the no-match rate is paid to review the segment) or 100% (a big effort, so the full rate applies for that segment). The complete TER effort table is as follows:

Does it apply to all projects?
No. TER will be used as the way to calculate payments only for MTPE work and only for MT’ed segments. Only 0-75% TM matches (new words) are machine-translated. This means that you will still work on segments with TM matches between 76-100%.
To summarize, your compensation will be calculated from:

1 The weighted wordcount for 76-100% TM matches (calculated as usual) and
2 The weighted TER score (calculated as per the table above) for 0-75% TM matches.

When will TER be calculated?
Naturally, a TER score can only be calculated after the post-editing work is done. For estimation purposes, we will provide you with our historical MT quality TER reports so you can plan and budget accordingly.
